Simply ensuring your windscreen wash remains topped up in your vehicle’s wiper fluid could keep Legionnaires’ Disease at bay, according to new Government research.
The HPA found a higher risk of Legionnaires’ Disease amongst professional drivers. Closer scrutiny identified a possible link with windscreen wash and the study concluded that in 20% of cases, lack of the fluid could be linked to contracting the disease.
It is thought the special additive within windscreen washer fluid could eliminate the harmful bacteria, the study concludes:
“A simple recommendation to use screenwash may mitigate transmission of Legionella bacteria to drivers and passengers.”
Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal lung infection contracted by breathing in small droplets of contaminated water commonly linked to water systems such as air conditioning units, showers and fountains, where water is given off in a fine spray. Early symptoms are similar to the flu virus such as tiredness, muscle ache, fever and headaches.
As well as lack of windscreen wash in the wiper fluid of vehicles, the HPA study also found that driving through industrial areas could also increase the risk of catching Legionnaires' disease.
